Chroma Card

Product Design – Branding

This was a three week project in my Behavior class where students had to create an out of box experience for a product which promoted behavioral change – derived through research from topics of our choosing. I chose spending habits and created the Chroma Card, a credit/debit card which tracks purchases and provides a visual cue for budgets in order to nudge users into developing better spending habits.

Research 

I interviewed three people about their spending habits to understand their
views on finances and behaviors when it came to their bank accounts. From that
I developed insights and opportunity areas for the project which you can see below. 

 

 
 

The Concept

Many people have anxiety when it comes to finances. This is because of "financial phobia", which essentially means that they're afraid of checking their bank accounts, even if they might be aware of their negative spending habits.

The idea behind Chroma Card is to reduce anxiety when it comes to having financial phobia. The physical card itself changes colors to give the user a visual cue on how much money they have left in their budget. It creates a quick, tangible way to track spending habits without users having to worry about big numbers. 

 
 

A quick sketch I created of the physical product, wireframes, and a mini storyboard of how I envisioned the experience to take place in the film. 

 
 

The UI

To make the product seem more believable, I decided to integrate the Chroma Card into a big bank, like Chase, which often releases special cards for their users. 

Users are able to set their budgets and track their spending habits through the Chase - Chroma application.

The Physical Aspect

Card

The card changes colors depending on what type of budget you set; 
Below, you can see the three different budget modes of the card:
daily, weekly, monthly, and their visual progressions. 

 

Box

The Chroma card comes in a white box held together by a branded sleeve.
Inside, you will find the card itself, and a simple plaque explaining the concept set into the lid.
